What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

RPL is the acknowledgement of skills and knowledge obtained through learning other than the formal education system.

It recognizes any prior knowledge and experience, measuring it against the qualification in which you are seeking. Completion of a training program is not necessary if you already possess all or part of the competencies included in the qualification.

Some areas considered;

  • Work skills or knowledge
  • Formal or informal education
  • Paid or unpaid work experience
  • Life experience
  • Community work experience

Benefits of RPL?

  • Saving time by not attending classes and completing unnecessary work
  • Having qualifications but needing more to get promoted
  • Looking for a career change and wanting to transfer skills
  • Moving from volunteering to paid work in their field
  • Completing your qualification in a shorter time

After an initial interview for an RPL, your assessor will supply you a list of requirements that you will need to gather and produce. You will also be advised of a time frame for you to produce this and for the completion of this whole process.

RPL costs?

RPL costs vary according to the level & type of qualification and amount of modules you are seeking.
Once an interview has been conducted, you will be advised of the fees and the payment structure.

Am I eligible for an RPL?

If you feel that you already possess the skills for one or more units, then certainly request an RPL for those units. It is possible to request RPL for an entire qualification. How much RPL you request will depend on whether you are able to provide evidence for all or some of the units in the qualification.
